Stay at home moms are considered to be full time employees these days. It has been calculated that if you were to earn a salary for what you do at home it would be $116,805.00 as of 2007. Of course that is totally hypothetical. There are telecommuting jobs, freelance jobs and home business jobs you could do that would earn an income but none that pay for being a stay at home mom.

In my opinion the calling to stay at home is the highest honor and responsibility. Before you walk in to your boss’s office with your eloquently written and well thought out letter of resignation, you will want to diligently consider these three things:

1. Your calling. With an open heart ask yourself “Who am I”, “What is my purpose” and “Where am I to serve”. Staying at home is not about watching your favorite soap and snacking on bon bons. I was amazed at how little free time I had when I made the transition to stay at home. It use to be that stay at home moms were looked down on. Thankfully our jobs have been elevated in the public eye and you are likely to find your friends telling you how lucky you are and how they wished they could stay at home.

2. Your finances. With the current economy most people who are working outside the home are finding their discretionary income is diminishing whether by reduction in pay, hours or increased cost of living. You will want to complete a comprehensive budget review before you decide to stay at home. Some of the things you should consider about the cost to work that are often overlooked are transportation, child care, meals out, dry cleaning and clothing. You will additionally want to consider the cost to stay at home some of which are increased utility bills, home maintenance, costs related to entertaining and playing with your kids, taking them on field trips and meals out. If it seems your finances are the only thing standing in the way of your calling you can always consider working from home. There a numerous options for the stay at home mom who wants to be a work at home mom.

3. Family support. When I told my kids that I would be staying at home I thought they were going to write my name in on the presidential ballot. It was the best news to them. My husband on the other hand, being the head of our household and bread winner, was a little less enthusiastic. We had to complete step two above before he was on board with the idea. We are one of the families that had to include the option of my working from home in addition to staying at home.

I love being home everyday. I love being able to attend school functions with my two girls. I love being able to have dinner ready when my husband comes home. I am blessed to be able to earn a little bit of money at the same time. I know this is my calling and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
